How to score:

These are just guidelines describing the specific formats provided in Arcus. Always check the competition you are doing for specific rules.

Anatomy of an archery target

  • A standard single target is scored from 1-10, starting from outside the circle being a miss and worth 0 points, and then counting from 1 to 10 from the outermost ring to the innermost ring.

  • Notice the gold area has three sections instead of two, and includes the bullseye.

  • A 3-spot target (vertical or triangle) is scored from 6-10. Anything outside of the blue 6 ring is considered a miss. A lot of compound shooters use this style of target to reduce the chances to robin-hood an arrow (splitting your own arrow like Robin Hood!)

  • Most competitions that use this target also use “line touching” to score the higher point, meaning the arrow just has to touch the line of the higher point to get it.

WA/FITA

  • WA stands for World Archery (formerly known as FITA from the French Fédération Internationale de Tir à l'Arc)

  • A lot of local clubs and competitions use this method of scoring, but check with your local club! If they say WA/FITA, then they use this method of scoring.

  • Scoring is different if you are shooting compound vs any other bow.

  • There are three sections in the gold area.

  • The center bullseye counts as a 10 for both recurve and compound.

  • The second or middle ring counts as a 10 for recurve (also called outer ten-ring scoring), and as a 9 for compound (also called inner ten-ring scoring).

  • The third gold ring counts as a 9 for both recurve and compound.

  • The rest of the target is scored normally.

The Vegas Shoot

  • The Vegas Shoot is held in Las Vegas every year.

  • Vegas scoring works like WA/FITA for recurve. Outer ten-ring scoring applies to all divisions. This is sometimes called a “Vegas 10”

Lancaster Classic

  • The Lancaster Classic is held every year in Lancaster, PA, and is hosted by Lancaster Archery Supply.

  • Scoring is the same for all divisions.

  • The center ring counts as an 11.

  • The second or middle gold ring counts as a 10.

  • The third or outer gold ring counts as a 9. The rest of the target is scored normally.
